The Nordic Way at COP17 in Durban

"The Nordic Way" implies a concrete, goal oriented cooperation towards common objectives that promote sustainable living and benefit society at large. This concept is the principle guiding the participation of the Nordic Council of Ministers at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference.

The Nordic countries have always been committed to the global effort to meet the challenges posed by the changing climate and do their bit to reduce CO2 emissions.

The Danish government has just put out a new energy strategy aimed at reducing CO2 emissions with 40 % before 2020 and the Norwegian government earlier this year launched the ambitious Energy+ initiative aimed at securing electricity in a sustainable way for millions of people in the developing world.

Sweden has recently taken over the chairmanship of the Arctic Council and has a strong commitment to fighting climate change in the Arctic. Finland and Iceland are equally committed to the global climate agenda and the effort to develop sustainable energy technologies.

The Nordic prime ministers recently launched a common green growth strategy and the environment ministers are also cooperating  towards Rio+20 next summer.

The Nordic Council of Ministers is the official body of cooperation of the five Nordic countries and the NCM will participate at the UN Climate Change Conference COP17 with two separate activities:

  • Two side events on the Nordic Partnership Initiative (NPI) on Upscaled Mitigation Action
  • An exhibition presenting the winners of the Nordic Energy Municipality (NEM) competition

The NPI focuses on presenting a possible path towards establishing so called nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). This is to be carried out through two pilot projects in Peru and Vietnam focusing on the waste management and cement sectors respectively.

The NEM focuses on energy efficiency and finding ways to minimize energy consumption in municipalities through planning, innovation and the engagement of citizens. It presents the winners of a competition unveiled by the Nordic Prime Ministers a month prior to COP17.

Both projects show a Nordic Way of reducing CO2 emissions through concrete, goal oriented and cross sectoral projects pointing towards common objectives that promote sustainable living and benefit society at large.

At COP17 the Nordic Council of Ministers will present the Nordic Way of trying  to tackle climate change via solutions achieved through informal, non-hierarchical networking which hopefully may serve as an inspiration for others.
