COP17, the UN Climate Change Conference, is entering its second week and there is hectic activity going on in Durban both in terms of negotiations, side events and exhibitions.

The Nordic Council of Ministers is represented at COP17 with a stand showing the winners of the Nordic Energy Municipality competition and two side events on the Nordic Partnership Initiative with Peru and Vietnam.

UN Climate Change TV featured an overview of NCM activities as the first week of COP17 was coming to a close.

Background

The Nordic Partnership Initiative consists of two pilot projects in Peru and Vietnam focusing on the waste management and cement sectors respectively. The aim is to build capacities to evaluate, structure and implement so called nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs), a fairly new international mechanism to help developing countries cut down on emissions and become more sustainable.

The Nordic Energy Municipality competition focuses on energy efficiency and on finding ways to minimize energy consumption in municipalities through planning, innovation and the engagement of citizens. It presents the winners of a competition unveiled by the Nordic Prime Ministers a month prior to COP17.

Both projects show a Nordic Way of reducing CO2 emissions through concrete, goal oriented and cross sectoral projects pointing towards common objectives that promote sustainable living and benefit society at large.
