Can men do it?
In 1999, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Trade Union Council created a work group to look into this issue. The result was a Nordic ideas document that was published in 2000. This book is an extended English version of that document. The Nordic changes are discussed in an international perspective with focus on new research, theories and methods. The issue of men and gender equality has not formerly been treated in a comprehensive manner in terms of what is probably men’s most important arena - working life. It has often been treated more as a question of morals than of practices. But in order for men to be able to change their situations, understanding is demanded - among men themselves, not just by women. Most men today want a better balance between home and work, time for caregiving, improved quality of life, and better relationships with women. Is it men’s attitudes that do not go deep enough, or are there practical hindrances that stop such a development? It is not enough to understand men’s situation from a women’s perspective - or through a superficial agreement with gender-equal opportunities. Based on new research from the Nordic region, the author proposes a caregiving model of men’s change, combined with other issues like democratisation, diversity, and reduction of violence. Central themes in the international debate - pro-feminism, men against violence, men’s groups, men’s empowerment - are discussed in this perspective.
