New Nordic climate initiative launched at COP17 in Durban

The Nordic countries renew their shared commitment to combat climate change with a new emissions reductions programme, The Nordic Partnership Initiative supported by the countries along with the Nordic Council of Ministers. The NPI will help Peru and Vietnam cut their greenhouse gas emissions in highly polluting sectors like waste and cement.

New research platforms pave the way for green growth

Nordic Council demands climate back on the agenda

The prime ministers must take a greater responsibility for the climate and the finance ministers must calculate climate matters into all budget considerations. This will bring the Nordic Region back in the lead when it comes to international climate policies, according to the Nordic Council. The Council also proposes setting up an international fund for technology development in climate issues.
Closer co-operation on climate change

Does the Nordic Region have the potential to show the world how to reduce energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases? The Nordic Council Environment Committee thinks so, and wants to turn the Region into a test bed for solutions to the climate problem. "The global climate negotiations have become bogged down, so we need to show the way forward and come up with new solutions," says a range of politicians gathered in Copenhagen, 1-3 November.
Albertslund in Denmark wins competition for Nordic Energy Municipality 2011

The winner of the prestigious competition, Nordic Energy Municipality 2011, was decided today. Finland's prime minister, Jyrki Katainen, announced the winner at an event in the Danish Architecture Centre in Copenhagen. Albertslund in Denmark won the competition, but both Drammen in Norway and Lidköping in Sweden were recognised for their efforts. The competition is part of the Nordic investment in green growth.

Green growth is an important enabler of growth and prosperity in the Nordic countries. The Nordic Business, Energy and Regional Ministers emphasise, therefore, that they are willing to assume responsibility for much of the future investments in green growth on which the Prime Ministers are expected make decisions in connection with the forthcoming Globalisation Forum and subsequent Prime Ministers' meeting.

The Nordic countries must guarantee a survey of how a reduction in a number of damaging climate substances can be achieved more quickly, says the Nordic Council. The Council also wants to explore the possibility of developing a formal collaboration between countries with high emissions reductions, as a complement to the UN negotiations.

Men have a greater impact on the environment than women, not least as a result of their food choices. This was one of the conclusions of the Nordic sustainability conference "Solutions" in Turku on 1 February. The Nordic Council of Ministers is an international advocate for a greater mainstreaming of the gender aspect in climate negotiations.
