NORA conference on the demographic challenges of the North Atlantic

Many young people are moving away. Only a few newcomers move to the region - and many of them leave again. This trend is a cause of concern in large parts of the North Atlantic region. In October the Nordic Atlantic Co-operation will host a conference 'Challenged by Demography' to shed light on the nature and magnitude of the problem – and contribute to the development of a strategy on how the North Atlantic region should deal with its particular demographic challenges.

The conference will be the launch of the Öresund Region's 10th anniversary celebrations. Leading politicians, organisations and businesses will present and debate a common vision for the region. The theme will be how ideas on freedom of movement, knowledge, research and a common labour market can strengthen the attraction of the region, also in a European perspective.

The Nordic working group Nordregio, under the Nordic Council of Ministers, will host a seminar on town planning in the Nordic capital regions. The seminar will focus on the governance systems and their inherent relations that ensure integration of physical planning in the regional development planning. It is in particular the intention to highlight the interaction between the state level and the other levels in this respect.

Future funding and organisation of welfare, in relation to the EU, as well as differences and similarities between the think tanks from Sweden and Finland will be discussed.
