Nordic co-operation on journalism

The Nordic countries co-operate on supplementary training for journalists. The objective is to build up and maintain a core of journalists who have particular qualifications to look at the Nordic countries as a cultural and political unit, and, from that perspective, are able to see their place in a European and global context.

Traditional Nordic values and identity are undergoing change. The whole Nordic region is influenced by the new economic, political, cultural and climatic impulses in an increasingly globalised world.

Freedom of Expression

The Nordic countries have a long and strong tradition for democracy, freedom of expression and a free and critical press.

The Nordic Council of Ministers' co-operation with the media in Russia and Belarus on journalism supports the exchange of journalists and editors between the Nordic countries, Russia and Belarus. This can contribute to creating networks between journalist and editors and thus a better understanding of the conditions in our neighbouring countries and more qualified news coverage from our neighbouring countries on both sides of the Baltic Sea.

Supplementary training focusing on Nordic values

Nordic Journalist Centre is a project under the Nordic Council of Ministers which offers supplementary training and networking for journalists in the Nordic countries and Northwest Russia.

As a reference institution for Nordic supplementary education institutions and Nordic journalists, the main goal of the Nordic Journalistic Centre is to place professional journalism, political, economic and social questions in a Nordic perspective. This goal is reached by courses, seminars and other competence building initiatives.

The Nordic Journalistic Centre is also responsible for a practical and scholarship scheme which is primarily directed towards Russian and Belarusian journalists and editors.
