UN Mercury Conference closes

The UN Mercury Conference in Stockholm drew to a close on Friday in a positive atmosphere. The internal power struggle within the EU, which had cast dark shadows over the conference earlier in the week, failed to have the negative effect on the meeting that many had feared. The participating countries, including the USA and China, have all adopted a positive stance to the target of a binding global agreement on mercury by 2013.

NCoE SVALI, CRAICC and DEFROST are the names of three new Nordic Centres of Excellence (NCoE) to be funded by the Top-level Research Initiative (TRI) sub-programme ‘Interaction between climate change and the cryosphere’. “We are convinced that these centres will conduct word-class reseach and generate considerable added value for Nordic research in this area," said a satisifed chair of the programme committee, Magnus Friberg.

There is a huge but untapped potential for reducing global emissions of mercury. Mercury emissions can be more than halved by 2020 with the help of modern technology, according to a recent report funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. The report was presented at a packed seminar on Tuesday during the UN mercury conference in Stockholm.

The original 15 nominations have been whittled down to six, most of them financial institutions, for the final round. Three of the finalists are from Norway (Storebrand, KLP and Cultura Sparbank), two from Sweden (Ekobanken, GES Investment Services) and one from Denmark (Merkur Andelskasse).
