Salaries and conditions of employment

The Nordic Council of Ministers' Secretariat is an international organisation. We offer contracts for a limited period of time and individual salaries. We have our own special salaries and conditions of employment for our employees.

Everyone employed in the Nordic Council, Nordic Council and Nordic Culture Fund is employed under Nordic conditions, with the exception of a few positions such as temps, temporary appointments and student interns. Nordic conditions mean, amongst other things, that your employment contract is limited to 5 years, with the possibility of a 3 year extension. It may not exceed eight years. In addition, you do not pay any Danish tax on salary and benefits, but only an internal duty to the council of ministers. This means that all salary payments are net pay.

We have individual salary levels within the different job categories. The salary consists of a basis salary and a contract increment of 25%. Pension is calculated on the basic salary. Salary increases are based on both general and individual salary increases.

Each individual employee is registered for a government officials' pension with the Danish Agency for Governmental Management at no cost to the employee. At the end of your service you have the right to a pension from the Danish state. One of the requirements is that you have been employed with us for three years. The size of your pension depends partly on your final salary and partly on the number of complete years of service with the Nordic Council of Ministers. You must investigate yourself how your employment at the Nordic Council of Ministers affects any other pension schemes you may have.

On the whole, the working hours follow those of the Danish state. The average working hours are 38 hours a week, with summer and winter hours. We work flexible hours and have the chance to take 2 days compensatory time-off a month. We do not have overtime, except for the co-ordinators.

We have 30 days holiday and 7 days extra holiday in lieu of longer working hours.

If you come from a position in the governmental sector in one of the Nordic countries you are entitled to take leave of absence for the period of your service, not exceeding 8 years. The period of service must be included as service performed abroad.

If you move to Denmark in connection with your employment, you are entitled to have the move paid, and a number of other allowances depending on whether you move with or without your family. You are also entitled on one annual paid trip home.

When you move to Denmark you are covered by the Danish social and public health insurance system.
