15 years of Nordic co-operation with Lithuania

The Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Lithuania celebrates its 15th anniversary on May 23with a seminar on integration in the Baltic Sea Regionand the next 15 years of partnership between the Nordic Region and Lithuania.

The seminar in the Reval Hotel Lietuva in Vilnius will be opened by Teppo Heiskanen, manager of the Vilnius office. The other opening speakers will be the Swedish Minister for Nordic Co-operation Berit Andnor and Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, former Icelandic Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will recall how it all started back in the epoch-making year 1991.

Other speakers will include Laima Liucija Andrikienė, MEP and Per Unckel, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The agreement to set up a new office was signed in February 1991. The signatories were Valdemaras Katkus, the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time, and Thor Pedersen, the Danish Minister for Nordic Co-operation at the time, now Minister of Finance. The first head of the office was Anders Kreuger. His main priority was to offer Lithuanians the chance to study in the Nordic Region,the only overseas option for young people from Lithuania at the time.
