20,000 Swedes commuted to work abroad in 2001

Feb 14, 2005

Swedes commuted to work in other countries far more than the rest of their Nordic neighbours did in 2001 according to the first ever Nordic commuting map. The biggest movement in 2001 was from Sweden to Norway with just over 13,300 commuters, which represented just over half of all commuting over national borders in the Nordic Region.

The national authorities in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway have been able for the first time to calculate the number of people who live in one country but work in another. The work was done on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers. It is the first time that integration in the Nordic labour market in the form of cross-border commuting has been studied in several countries at the same time.
