"What do you intend doing about the many expensive charges levied on bank transfers in the Nordic Region?" he was asked by Henrik Dam Kristensen MP, a Danish member of the Nordic Council Citizens' and Consumer Rights Committee.

He referred to a survey conducted by the Nordic Council Secretariat which showed, for example, that it can cost NOK 100 to send and receive money between a Finnish and a Norwegian bank.

"That's a good question. I was not aware that was the case. We need to take that issue up in the informal Nordic Consumer Forum. But I will also take it up with the ministers for co-operation," Haarder said in the Swedish parliament on Thursday.

The Freedom of Movement Forum discusses specific obstacles to cross-border freedom of movement, and Haarder made it clear that he considered bank charges a prime example.

Kristensen (Soc Dem) raised the issue during question time at the annual Session of the Nordic Council on Thursday, 29 October.
