Branding the Nordic Ecolabel abroad

The Nordic Ministers for the Environment have adopted a new vision for the Nordic Ecolabel, which will also brand the Nordic region abroad in the future. At the same time, funding has been increased for the Nordic Council of Ministers' work on ecolabelling. The Nordic Ecolabel will also work in line with the EU Ecolabel to a much greater degree, according to the ministers.

The Nordic Ecolabel The Nordc Ecolabel is one of the most well known in the world, according to an British study last year. But it can become even better, according to the Nordic Ministers for the Environment, who have adopted a new vision for the Nordic Ecolabel.

In 2015 the Nordic Ecolabel will be one of the most effective consumer policy instruments in the world to create a better environment.

The Nordic Ecolabel will inspire other ecolabels to lay down more stringent demands for labelling, and at the same time strengthen its profile as an instrument for climate-smart efforts for increased sustainability.

In other words, the Nordic Ecolabel will lead the way and give consumers even clearer choices. This applies also to green public-sector procurement, not just in relation to the individual consumer.

At the same time, co-operation with the business community and producers will be strengthened. The vision also sees the ecolabel as an effective competitive parameter in an increasingly environmentally-conscious world. This must be included in the future work with the Nordic Ecolabel, which must also be better co-ordinated with the EU Ecolabel.

The Nordic Ecolabelling Board, which administers the Nordic Ecolabel on behalf of the Nordic Council of Ministers, will received increased funding in 2011 to the tune of approximately DKK 1.5 million to boost the work with the vision.

The ministers have asked for an economic analyse of the Nordic Ecolabel in 2011 and expect, in addition, a midterm evaluation of the new vision for the Nordic Ecolabel in 2013.

  • Sustainable consumption and production

A substantial proportion of the damage done to the environment can be attributed to current patterns of consumption that squander natural resources. Most production techniques can be refined in ways that minimise emissions and use natural resources more economically. An active, environmentally friendly product policy reduces both the impact of chemicals and the environmental effects of waste management, and at the same time minimises the use of non-renewable natural resources.
