Closer co-ordination of EU regulations

Endeavours to progress towards freedom of movement and an open Nordic Region are predicated on the countries working more closely and actively together on EU issues, the Nordic Freedom of Movement Group announced after the Nordic Council meeting in Tampere on Tuesday.

As the global situation becomes increasingly unstable, official Nordic co-operation assumes greater importance for the people of the Region, especially policies such as cross-border freedom of movement and the flexible labour market. However, progress in the Region very much depends on EU directives.

Unfortunately, the way in which the individual Nordic countries process EU directives doesn't just make progress difficult, it actually constitutes a barrier to progress. The Freedom of Movement Group is calling on Nordic governments to redouble their efforts to co-ordinate the implementation of EU regulations.

At the end of October, a proposal will be put to the Session of the Nordic Council that an important job for the country holding the annual Presidency of the Council of Ministers should be to screen EU directives that have a particular impact on relationships between the Nordic countries and then invite ministries from the neighbouring countries to talks about the best way to interpret and implement them.

The idea behind the proposal is to use open and active communication to make a tangible impact on the way in which the countries adapt to EU law and to ensure that new EU directives do not hold back progress in the Nordic Region.

The Nordic Council will visit the European parliament in late autumn as part of the process of closer collaboration.
