Conference about the Nordic welfare model
How will affect the Nordic welfare model of the future be affected by challenges such as an aging population and globalisation? In what ways can the model inspire progress elsewhere in the world? These will be two of the main items on the agenda when researchers, politicians and civil servants converge on Helsinki for a major conference on April 5-6.
"Economic growth is affected by globalisation, which – in combination with an aging population and increasing needs for care – represents a challenge for our tax-based welfare system,” says Liisa-Maria Voipio-Pulkki, Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Service.
The conference – "What Role will the Nordic Welfare Model play in Globalization?" – will be held in Sokos Hotel Presidentti (Södra Järnvägsgatan 4, Helsinki).
A press conference will be held in Pub Adjutantti at the same address on Tuesday 5 April at 14:15. It will be attended by Kari Välimäki (Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Social Services), Liisa-Maria Voipio-Pulkki (Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Services), Gard Titlestad (Head of the Nordic Council of Ministers' Department of Knowledge and Welfare), Tone Mørk (Director of the Nordic Centre for Welfare and Social Issues), Gilda Farrell (Head of the Council of Europe’s Social Cohesion Development and Research Division) and Johannes Jütting (Head of Unit for Poverty Reduction ands Social Development at the OECD).
Around the world, the Nordic welfare model is held up as a particularly successful way of tackling the deep economic crises that other countries have been unable to avoid. The conference will analyse the model in-depth and illustrate how different strategies will help it face the challenges of the future.
"Economic growth is affected by globalisation, which – in combination with an aging population and increasing needs for care – represents a challenge for our tax-based welfare system. In an international context it is all about showing how basic human values are taken seriously in the Nordic countries and how this is reflected in our welfare system,” says Liisa-Maria Voipio-Pulkki, Director of the Ministry of Health and Social Services and chair of the conference.
Registration deadline for the conference and for the press conference is Monday April 4 at 12:00 by e-mail to media@stm.fi or to information officers Anna Påfs or Nino Simic.
