Danish Christmas traditions in Iceland
The Nordic Information Office and the Nordic Association in Akureyri are showcasing the Nordic Region and Nordic Christmas traditions this year. On 26 November, locals partook of a traditional Danish Christmas lunch, during which the author Einar Kárason and the singer Kristjana Arngrímsdóttir provided entertainment.
The programme for Sunday 4 December was packed with Danish Christmas fayre and Nordic traditions. Danish hot doughnuts, ginger biscuits, shortbread, fruit syrup water and mulled wine were all on the menu, while the entertainment consisted of stories about Christmas traditions and songs from the other Nordic countries. Kalak, the Iceland-Greenland Friendship Society, put on an exhibition of photos from Greenland.
Eivørs Pálsdóttir's concert in Deiglan on 11 December drew a crowd of 115. "It was a great set by a big voice from the Faroe Islands," said María Jónsdóttir, the manager of the Information Office.
Thursday 15 December was literature night. Three authors from the North of Iceland, Ingibjörg Hjartardóttir, Björn Þorláksson og Jón Hjaltason, read from their works.
