Dumping fish is reprehensible
EU-based trawlers dump huge quantities of fish back into the sea every year, a practice reprehensible from an ethical and environmental perspective, and one that does nothing to enhance the sustainability of the fish stocks.
It is one of the most pressing issues that the current reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) needs to address, according to two members of the Nordic Council. Ann-Kristine Johansson MP (Sweden), the chair of the Nordic Council Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and Kristen Touborg MP (Denmark), the deputy chair, penned an opinion piece for newspapers in both countries.
The new CFP is scheduled to come into force in 2013 and the pair availed themselves of the opportunity to reiterate the length and depth of the Nordic traditions as fishing nations.
“There are several working models for fisheries management in the Nordic Region that the EU should consider during its reform process, e.g. fixing the number of fishing days per boat, quotas, minimum measurements for catch or a ban on fishing in breeding grounds,” they wrote.
The Nordic Council is holding its winter meetings in Copenhagen, 26-27 January On Wednesday in the Danish parliament the Environment Committee will host a seminar about reform of the CFP.
