Focus on Nordic food safety in China
Fighting salmonella and other solutions that promote food safety in the Nordic countries were given excellent visibility in Shanghai on Monday. A Nordic-Chinese forum on food safety attracted a full house. About 160 of the participants were Chinese.
The purpose of the forum was to exchange information about food safety and make contacts to promote co-operation between the Nordic countries and China in this area.
There are huge contrasts between the Nordic countries and China - the level of food safety in the Nordic region is considered one of the highest in the world while China is at a much lower level. Chinese food scandals, most recently with contaminated milk powder, make headline news at regular intervals.
The forum was attended by Chinese and Nordic ministers, as well as senior officials from the food sector. The list of speakers included the Ministers for Food from Denmark and Finland, Henrik Høegh and Sirkka-Liisa Anttila, as well as Pu Changcheng, Vice Minister for AQSIQ, the Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The participants also made a very tangible acquaintance with Nordic food - lunch was prepared with Nordic raw materials by three top Nordic chefs. In addition, two well-attended press conferences were organised during the conference, one on food safety and the other on the Nordic chefs.
The forum was organised by the Nordic Council of Ministers in co-operation with AQSIQ. Dozens of events have been organised in the rustic Nordic Lighthouse which serves as a Nordic hub during the ongoing World Expo 2010 Shanghai. The Nordic Council of Ministers has funded or been involved in a number of events as part of the Council of Ministers' globalization venture.
