Gender Equality ministers share experience of preventing violence

The Nordic Ministers of Gender Equality are in New York this week for the 57th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The ministers will, in particular, share the experiences of the Nordic countries of their joint efforts to prevent and stop violence against women.

The ministers attended the open of this year's CSW session on Monday. On Wednesday they will hold a joint meeting with Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of the gender equality organisation, UN Women.

The theme for this year's CSW session is men's violence against women, which is also reflected in the panel debate with the ministers of gender equality, From prevention to response – Engaging men and boys in preventing and ending violence against women and girls, on Wednesday.

Maria Arnholm, Chair of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Gender Equality in 2013, pointed out that the Nordic countries have successfully co-ordinated their national action plans to combat violence against women and girls.

"These issues have a high priority in the Nordic countries. The measures that our countries have adopted to combat violence against women also include measures to curb sex trafficking, which is important to emphasise", says Maria Arnholm.

"We must not forget the obvious: If we worked harder to prevent domestic violence it would not be such a huge problem", says Arnholm.

The Nordic panel debate will be broadcast live online on norden.org/csw57 on Wednesday 6 March starting at 19.00 Swedish time. You can also follow the ministers during the CSW week on the Nordic Council of Ministers' English language Twitter @nordenen.
