"The Nordic countries and Nordic politicians must emphasise in all the Nordic countries, and everywhere in the world, that Iceland will stand by its commitments. Nothing else has ever been in question. It must be emphasised at all times that Iceland takes responsibility, but asks at the same time for fair treatment", says Guðfríður Lilja Grétarsdóttir, parliamentary leader of the Left-Green Movement of Iceland and Vice-Chair of the Icelandic delegation to the Nordic Council.

"A balanced, fair discussion of what is now happening in Iceland may mean life or death for the welfare society and for Iceland's economic independence in the future", says the Icelandic MP, who is a member of the Nordic Council's Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

Guðfríður Lilja thanks Danish Line Barfod very much for having supported Iceland's case with the Nordic countries earlier this week.

After the Icelandic President rejected the government's so-called Ice law on Tuesday 5 January, a lot of the media have reported that the Icelanders will not repay the money that the British and Dutch lost with Icesave during the bank collapse of 2008. That is not the case.
