The Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council, led by President Helgi Hjörvar, will prioritise security, the sea and culture when the Icelanders take over the helm of Nordic parliamentary co-operation in 2010.

The Nordic Council President, Helgi Hjörvar, talks about the priorities of the Icelandic Presidency in 2010.

"Iceland will prioritise security in the broad sense," says Helgi Hjörvar, President of the Nordic Council in 2010. He expands on this by stating that this means co-operation against organised crime and trafficking, more traditional security issues in line with the Stoltenberg report, and last but not least, the economy, which has proved to be a major security issue recently.

In addition to security, the Icelanders will focus on the sea, for example, through the Baltic Sea co-operation and co-operation in the vulnerable North Atlantic.

Culture and language are the final topics which will be an important area of focus for Iceland during the year of the Presidency.

The Social Democratic member of the Althing Helgi Hjörvar was elected as President at the Nordic Council's Session in Stockholm in October 2009. The Vice-President is Illugi Gunnarsson who represents the Icelandic Independence Party.
