Icelandic pupils learning Danish

A group of 33 primary and lower-secondary school pupils and three teachers from Iceland are taking a Danish course at the Kalø School of Languages. It is the third time that the Nordic Information Office in Akureyri and the local education authority have organised such a course.

The teachers accompanying the group are learning about the latest teaching methods in languages. The pupils are receiving seven hours of Danish teaching per day from 6-20 June, four in the classroom and three outside.

"The trip has been facilitated by a grant from the the Nordic Council of Ministers Nordplus-Language programme and the Foundation for Danish- Icelandic Co-operation.A total of 84 pupils and eight teachers have now availed themselves of the opportunity to take part and I am sure that the group contains a number of future Icelandic ambassadors to other Nordic countries," said Maria Jonsdottir, head of the Nordic Information Office in Akureyri.

A report on the 2005 course by Michael Dal associate professor at the Iceland University of Education is available on the information office's website.
