The Nordic Council Environment Committee is paying even greater attention to nuclear safety in the wake of the recent disaster in Japan. The Committee will enter into a dialogue with Russian MPs about nuclear power stations in Murmansk and Russia and will again concentrate attention on the treatment of radioactive waste in Britain.

“As Nordic MPs it is important that we monitor the safety of nuclear plants, not just in our own Region but also in neighbouring countries,” explains Ann-Kristine Johansson, chair of the Environment Committee.

“Monitoring is especially necessary given that the Russians are planning nuclear power plants at sea and we have all just seen the effects of the tsunami in Japan,” she adds.

The committee was gathered for the Nordic Council's April meetings, one outcome of which was the decision to submit input to reform of EU agricultural policy.

The focus will be on guaranteed supplies of food and on the abolition of export subsidies. The Committee will also present a proposal for radical revision of the current funding system.

The Council members also discussed Nordic participation in the global sustainability conference in Rio next year, improving maritime safety in the North Atlantic and the potential for joint Nordic input into the UN climate negotiations in December.
