Journalists are now welcome to apply for accreditation to the 69th Session of the Nordic Council in Helsinki from 31 October until 2 November 2017. The Session is the biggest annual Nordic political forum and is attended by MPs, prime ministers, government ministers and opposition leaders from across the whole of the Region.

Important themes at the Session will include the Nordic Region as the most integrated region in the world, freedom of movement and Nordic trust, issues that will also be on the agenda for the summit of Nordic prime ministers and members of the Nordic Council on Tuesday 31 November.

On Monday 30 October, another event will discuss Nordic energy and the recent review and report on the future of energy co-operation by the former Nokia CEO, Jorma Ollila. This event is open to journalists.

A series of topical political issues will be discussed at the Session, including integration and the UN Agenda 2030 sustainable development goals. Topical international matters, as well as security and defence issues, will be addressed on 1 November when the ministers for defence and foreign affairs present their reports to Council. During the Session, the Nordic prime ministers will also meet with their Baltic counterparts.

The Session will be held in the newly renovated Finnish Parliament building in Helsinki.

Prize ceremony

The winners of the Nordic Council prizes will be announced on the evening of Wednesday 1 November in Finlandia Hall. There will be a press conference and photo opportunity immediately afterwards.

Journalists wishing to cover the Session, prize ceremony and the energy event must apply for accreditation no later than 2pm on 27 October. A valid press card is a prerequisite. Accreditation is also required for press conferences held by ministers during the Session.

The Nordic Council is the official body for Nordic inter-parliamentary co-operation. The autumn Session serves as a forum for political debate between the Council and the governments, represented by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
