New Nordic Food lives on

Nordic cuisine is experiencing a boom these days both in the Nordic countries and internationally. So, the ministers for agriculture, forestry, fisheries and food decided at their meeting in Iceland on Thursday that the successful programme New Nordic Food should continue.

Jul 03, 2009

The Nordic Council of Ministers launched New Nordic Food in 2006. The aim of the programme, which terminates in its current form at the end of 2009, is to promote Nordic food culture and gastronomy, as well as design and tourism linked to food, at local, regional and international levels.

The new programme is expected to cover the period 2010-2014 with a planned total budget of DKK 15 million.

The programme will have a number of focus areas, for example, small and large scale food production at regional level. Another goal is to strengthen the links between food and tourism to a much greater extent than today – good food attracts tourist and promotes the local community.

Communication will also be an important aspect of the new programme, in other words, increasing visibility and branding the qualities and opportunities to be found in Nordic cuisine. The programme also focuses on gene resources and ingredients as well as the health aspects of Nordic cuisine. The final programme is under preparation and will be presented in the autumn.

New Nordic Food is regarded as a great success which has contributed to promoting and drawing attention to Nordic cuisine and Nordic ingredients, and creating a network of Nordic players. As well as dozens of its own projects, New Nordic Food has produced many national side effects. One example is the health project OPUS in Denmark with a total budget of DKK 100 million.
