"Something is wrong when so many under-30s are unemployed," noted Lindberg, who succeeded Lisbeth Sejer Gøtzsche on Sunday.

Rising youth unemployment in the Region is not only due to the current economic crisis, it has been a growing problem for some time. Lindberg believes it is one of the most important issues ahead and that the countries must learn from each other if solutions are to be found. The annual Session of the UNR chose 'youth and the labour market' as the theme for its work in 2010.

The newly elected president, who represents the Nordic Centre Youth League (NCF), is passionate about a number of issues. A narrower focus, the language debate and greater visibility are just some of them.

"It's important that the Nordic Council confines itself to a narrower range of topics to maximise our impact. Freedom of movement is one of the most relevant topics and one where there is plenty of potential for improvement," she added.

The new President declined to drop the language debate just yet.

"It's not just about interpreting. It's also about talking more clearly and remembering that not everybody understands. As far as language is concerned, the UNR will also continue to promote education and training," the young Finn explained.

She also sees putting over the Nordic message to party organisations and the general public as one of her main challenges.

"A lot of people think the nature of Nordic co-operation is a bit fuzzy," she concluded.

Having previously served on the Presidium of the UNR, Minna Lindberg is well acquainted with official Nordic co-operation.
