Nordic bioenergy prize goes to Swedish researcher

Associate Professor Göran Berndes from Sweden has been awarded the Nordic Council of Ministers' Bioenergy prize. The Bioenergy prize consists of DKK 50,000 and a diploma. The prize goes to an individual or organisation for an outstanding contribution to the promotion, use or production of bioenergy.

The Swedish historian Gunnar Wetterberg has been commissioned to expand upon his vision of a new Nordic federal state in the Nordic Council of Ministers' and Nordic Council's Yearbook 2010, which will be published in the autumn.
New head of personnel

The one hundred members of staff at the Nordic Council and Council of Ministers are to have a new personnel manager. Unni Vennemoe (55) from Norway will take up the post as head of the Secretariat's Personnel Department before the summer.

International agreement needed for shipping in Northwest Passage

The Canadian Minister of Transport John Baird has announced that Canada will introduce a compulsory register of shipping for all large vessels in the Northwest Passage from 1 July this year. The Nordic Council objects to the proposal in a part of the world the Nordic countries have considered a top priority for international co-operation for many years.

"The risks involved in the reprocessing of nuclear waste are enormous. We should therefore investigate other alternatives for disposing of nuclear waste", said the Swedish MP, Jan Lindholm, member of the Nordic Council, at a conference on nuclear waste in Brussels on Wednesday. The conference focused mainly on the controversial British nuclear waste plant Sellafield.

The co-operation mechanisms of the EU’s Renewable Energy sources (RES) Directive are new and consequently it is still not fully clear how these flexible mechanisms should be used, nor their consequences on the electricity market and renewable energy sources. Thus, the Nordic Council of Minister’s Working Group for Renewable Energy commissioned GreenStream to evaluate the usefulness and consequences of utilising the co-operation mechanisms of the RES Directive in the Nordic Countries.

A total of 15 candidates are competing for the Nordic Council's Nature and Environment Prize 2010. Eight candidates are from Sweden, three from Norway, two from Finland and two from Denmark. Neither Iceland nor any of the autonomous territories, Greenland, the Faroe Islands or Åland, have any candidates this time.

The Nordic Council of Ministers is attending the 54th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW54) in the UN Building in New York in early March. The ministers will be on hand to discuss national and Nordic results as well as future challenges.
