Nordic angle on journalism

CFJE has been responsible for running the Nordic Journalist Centre, NJC, since the new year. After the summer holidays ideas and thoughts on NJC’s future work will be apparent in new initiatives and activities. NJC’s future activities will be based on the centre’s historical title and background as Nordic Journalist Course. Nordic and Journalist will be emphasised. “These two concepts will be recurring themes throughout everything that NJC does”, writes Steen K. Rasmussen, manager NJC.

What is meant by that is that knowledge of Nordic conditions, the relationship of the Nordic countries with the rest of the world, the common Nordic cultural heritage and all the other aspects of being a Nordic institution must be incorporated into practically everything that NJC is involved in.

Journalism is naturally the other important element, by which we mean professional and experienced intake to the profession. What can we learn from each other about journalism across borders? How can we become better at communicating, analysing and describing Nordic and other circumstances?

The plan is to extend a great number of activities under the auspices of the NJC which will take on a more informal competency building nature. This applies particularly to conferences and seminars, shorter training courses and project across country borders.

The first two initiatives take as their starting point the fact that there are common Nordic interests at play with regard to marine fishing and the games market respectively. At these two events Nordic journalists have the chance to meet and learn – both from a professional and content point of view.

Later in the year the NJC will organise a joint Nordic conference on journalism as a result of the Danish cartoons, just as there are plans to involve the Nordic journalist further education institutes in a common co-operation forum for the pleasure and benefit of Nordic journalists seeking further education.
