The Nordic Council of Ministers has decided to set aside DKK 4.8 million for a media co-operation project titled “Journalism in a modern democracy”. The project includes courses, seminars and master classes for journalists from Northwest Russia and the Nordic Region. These focus on topics including objective journalistic coverage of elections and the professional use of social media.

The objective of the project is to increase contact between journalists in the two regions, as well as to improve the quality of journalism in and around Northwest Russia. The project supports the development of the independent press in Russia though the exchange of experiences relating to working methods, source criticism, social media and the role of the press in a democratic society.
This is the point of a two-year continuation of a 20-year collaboration between the Nordic Journalist Centre/Danish School of Media and Journalism and partners in Northwest Russia.

The project is being implemented in co-operation with Fojo Media Institute in Sweden, Barents Press International in Murmansk, Regional Press Institute in St. Petersburg, and the journalism programme at the University of Helsinki.
