The Presidium of the Nordic Council has announced that the Council is seeking to postpone this spring’s round table discussions with Russian politicians, and a study visit to Petrozavodsk in the Russian Republic of Karelia for Nordic politicians.

“The election in Finland and other pressing matters in our national parliaments are the primary reasons for wishing to find a new date for the planned round table discussions in Moscow in April,” explains the President of the Nordic Council Höskuldur Þórhallsson.

Last spring’s round table discussions due to be held in Stockholm were also postponed owing to the situation in Ukraine. No true round table discussions were held last year, but an extended meeting with Russian MPs was arranged in conjunction with the Nordic Council’s session in Stockholm in October.

In January of this year, the Nordic Council of Ministers’ office in Russia was given “foreign agent” status by the Russian authorities. The Ministers for Nordic Co-operation found this to be unacceptable, resulting in the decision to end operations in the country. This was a topic of discussion during the Nordic Council’s now concluded session in Copenhagen.
