Cyber security and digitisation are on the agenda as the Nordic Council kicks off an autumn of politics with its September meetings in Reykjavík. The two days of meetings on 19–20 September will bring together the Presidium, Council committees, party groups and others.

Cyber security will be the theme of a debate on the second day of the meeting. The keynote outside speaker who will lead the debate is Sigurður Emil Pálsson, chair of the Icelandic Cyber Security Council.

The President of the Nordic Council, Britt Lundberg, will also speak on the theme of cyber security. She is looking forward to what promises to be a lively debate on a highly topical theme.

“In the light of all the hacking and the massive cyber attacks that are going on in the world the moment, and even accusations of manipulating elections, it is incredibly important that we in the Nordic Council also do what we can to ensure that everybody feels safe in the digital world of today,” she points out.

The debate on cyber security will be held in the Harpa concert venue and opera house from 14:45 until 16:00 on 20 September 20 and is open to the media.

Digitisation high on the agenda

Another important theme to be discussed in Reykjavík will be digitisation. Three of the Nordic Council’s four committees will hold a joint meeting to discuss proposals for Nordic co-operation on digitisation, including the Nordic Region as a world leader in 5G with the focus on welfare technology and about how important it is that everybody in the Region has access to adequate data communications.

The September meetings herald the start of a lively political autumn, culminating in the 69th Session of the Nordic Council in Helsinki, 31 October–2 November.
