Nordic fisheries look to the world
The Nordic countries should play a more active role in international fisheries co-operation, especially within the framework of the UN. A great deal is to be gained from closer contact with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), whose remit includes fisheries, according to a report on the Nordic Council of Ministers’ visit to the FAO.
Among those that the delegation of Nordic fisheries experts met was Assistant Director-General FAO Fisheries Department, Ichiro Nomura, who was highly positive about closer partnership between the Nordic Region and the FAO.
Nordic fisheries co-operation under the Council of Ministers covers many of the same areas as the FAO, e.g. the climate, genetic resources, traceability and ocean governance, so both sides would reap the benefits of synergy effects.
The Council of Ministers already enjoys speaking rights at FAO fisheries meetings but has not made great use of the option to highlight Nordic experiences and points of view and gain greater international visibility.
In many contexts, Nordic fisheries co-operation is directed at bodies outside the Region itself, in particular at the EU. The Nordic Council of Ministers has, for example, played an active part in the current reform of EU fisheries policy. The reformed EU fisheries policy is scheduled to come into force in 2013.
