The Nordic House in the Faroe Islands celebrates its 30th anniversary on 8 May. The house was opened in 1983 and the special birthday will be marked with a major open house event.

The programme for the day places particular emphasis on Nordic cultural experiences, and the birthday guests will experience Finnish tango, Swedish entertainment, Nordic short films, Nordic food and a concert with 10 Nordic singer-songwriters.

Other birthday events are rooted in the local arts scene, with an international character. Worth mentioning is a Faroese fairy tale told based on a knitting installation by the Faroese designer Jóhanna av Steinum, and an exhibition of the recently returned home 100 glass birds which the Faroese artist, Tróndur Patursson, exhibited at the Nordic Cool Exhibition in Washington in February.

According to tradition for a festive event on the Faroe Islands, the evening will end with a Faroese chain dance where all the guests join the ring to sing about the heroes and giants of the past in a Nordic cultural house that is open and receptive to new impulses and new cultural heroes in Nordic co-operation.

As a kind of postlude to the birthday week, a large concert will be held on Saturday 11 May for the slightly younger generation with new up-and-coming artists from Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

The Nordic House on the Faroe Islands has had a major impact on art and culture in the Faroe Islands for the past 30 years. A good sign is the high level of interest and commitment which the house experiences daily from the Faroese general public and from the Faroese, Nordic and international artists who want to be part of the house's future.
