The President of the Nordic Council, Höskuldur Þórhallsson, has condemned the terrorist attacks in Copenhagen at the weekend, expressing the Council’s support to Denmark and all those affected.

“I condemn these attacks. They were deliberately directed against freedom of opinion and expression – fundamental values that underpin the Nordic welfare states and the Nordic Council”, Þórhallsson said.

“We must continue the fight against extremism and prejudice in our countries and preserve the openness and freedom of expression that epitomise life in the Nordic Region”, he added.

The Nordic Council is the official inter-parliamentary body of the Nordic Region. Human rights, democracy, equality, and the rule of law have been fundamental values of the Nordic Council since its inception in 1952.
