Study of food waste from shops
Every year shops throw enormous amounts of food on the refuse dump, mostly due to wrong quantities purchased or because the sell-by date is exceeded. Discarded food has an impact on the environment as well as causing financial losses.
The Nordic Council of Ministers, the Nordic governments' co-operative body, now wants to investigate how great the quantities ultimately are and how the problem can be addressed. The project will be carried out by the Council of Ministers' Waste Group and the goal is to present the results in 2011.
The final report will contain, amongst other things, information on the quantity of food waste from shops and wholesalers in the different Nordic countries, as well as an assessment of the potential and consequences of reducing food wastage. The project will propose good examples and ideas of measures that the shops and the authorities can make use of to prevent food waste. The study will also be useful for EU member states in the work of implementing the revised waste framework directive.
