Criteria for nomination
The prize is awarded to a Nordic company, organisation, or individual which has integrated consideration for the environment into its business or work in an exemplary manner, or which has made an extraordinarily positive contribution to the environment in some other way. The winner must have a Nordic perspective and operate in the Nordic Region as well as/or with parties outside the Region.
Theme and nominations
The Adjudication Committee has chosen the theme in order to promote initiatives that support the UN's new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, specifically, SDG 14 on “life below water”.
“The sea is particularly significant to the Nordic Region. It connects all the Nordic countries, many of our most important resources come from it and we have a large shipping industry, so it is in our interests to protect the seas. It is also our responsibility,” says Cilia Holmes Indahl, Director Sustainability, Aker BioMarine, and chair of the Adjudication Committee.
"The Nordic Region is a pioneer in sustainable solutions, so we look forward to receiving nominations for Nordic initiatives that help protect marine life – regionally and globally,” Holmes Indahl adds.

About the prize and the award ceremony
The point of the Nordic Council Environment Prize is to promote and boost the best and most innovative initiatives that support and manifest the political agenda for the environment, climate and sustainability in the Nordic Region. The nominees for the Prize will be announced in September, and it will be awarded for the twenty-fourth time at a ceremony in Oslo on 30 October 2018. The winner will receive DKK 350,000.
