Sustainable Development up-close: Nordic countries at UN meeting in May
The Nordic Council of Ministers will attend the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-19) in New York in May. Focus is on production and consumption and the links between sustainability and a green economy. Leading international speakers will attend the two Nordic events at CSD-19. A new website outlines Nordic activities at the UN.
The Nordic countries are front runners in the field of sustainable development.
In 2001 the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) launched the first regional SD-strategy in the world and the five Nordic countries are at the top of numerous global rankings regarding sustainability. The Nordic countries have also shown over the last decades that emission free growth is possible.
At the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in New York in May, the NCM will focus on sustainable production and consumption, with an emphasis on the importance of ecolabelling and green public procurement.
Two Nordic events held at CSD-19 will focus on sustainable consumption and production in a green economy and on ways to tackle the global environmental impacts caused by consumption. Se more at www.norden.org/csd19
The Nordic countries were instrumental in bringing about the first ten year framework programme for sustainable consumption and production in 2002 and Nordic activities at CSD-19 will point forward to the adoption of a new framework programme.
The website on Nordic activities at CSD19 will also feature articles by Nordic ministers and leading experts, as well as comments on the status and future of sustainable development.
The site also presents a number of reports and other resources on the topic and serves as the hub of Nordic activities at CSD-19.
Finally, the concept of New Nordic Food – a new approach to a sustainable regional kitchen - is highlighted in connection with Nordic activities at the UN meetings.
