The fight for the Arctic
The snow is melting and marine traffic is increasing. The climate is changing and the extraction of natural resources is being intensified. But what is happening to the Arctic and what role do the Nordic countries play in the race for a place in the midnight sun?
Analys Norden zooms in on the Arctic in its June issue which follows up on the Arctic Council's meeting in May and assesses the role of the Nordic countries in the development of the world's most northerly region.
Denmark handed over the Chairmanship of the Arctic Council to Sweden on 12 May in Nuuk, and before that Norway held the Chairmanship. Finland is working on setting up an EU Arctic Centre in Rovaniemi and Iceland is naturally an active party in the developments in the north.
So all the five Nordic countries are deeply committed to the future of the Arctic region. The Nordic Council of Ministers is also involved, amongst other things with the publication of a major research study Megatrends, which assesses the outlook for the high north in the long term.
The Council of Ministers and the Nordic Council, in collaboration with the North Atlantic Co-operation (NORA), are also organising two major conferences in the Faroe Islands which coincide with the publication of this issue of Analys Norden. The first will focus on green growth and sustainable aquaculture, the second on safety at sea.
