The Great Nordic Climate Challenge starts today, on Nordic Climate Day, 11 November. It is a fun but informative competition between schools in the Nordic countries. The target group is pupils aged 12-14 in the Nordic countries (6-8 grade in Denmark, Sweden and Finland, and 7-9 grade in Norway and Iceland).

The pupils compete by learning very specific ways of living more sustainably. The school classes will measure, for example, their heating, water and energy consumption during the duration of the competition, and those who manage to reduce their consumption most will naturally win points for their achievements.

As well as being a competition, the climate challenge is also an ambitious and comprehensive facts project. On the Nordic Climate Challenge website there is a large amount of educational material which is intended for the science and social sciences subjects.

The competition is organised within the framework of the project Norden i Skolan, and is part of the Nordic Council of Ministers' green growth initiative. The aim is to engage as many Nordic schools and classes as possible, and in this way to spread interest and knowledge about energy and environmental issues.

The competition will run until Nordic Day, 23 March 2015. National and Nordic prizes will be awarded during the time of the competition.
