The people in focus at the Nordic Council Annual Session
MPs from all the Nordic countries now want to ensure the rights and well-being of the individual Nordic citizen. An electronic register of "dangerous doctors", a common Nordic television channel and processing the case of Danish repatriation of other Nordic citizens in need of social help are therefore some of the highlights during the Nordic Council Session 2010 in Reykjavik.
The Session starts early with the launch of Gunnar Wetterberg's book 'The Nordic Federal State' at the Grand Hotel on Monday 1 November at 17.
"The Nordic Federal State is realistic utopia. It is a vision lying in wait for active cross-border policies, both geographic and political", writes Wetterberg who will be present in Reykjavik.
Natural resources must be owned by the people, according to the Left-Socialist Green Group, which will hold a press conference on Tuesday morning at 8.45 in the Grand Hotel. Iceland's Minister of Finance, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, will attend.
The Nordic prime ministers will also meet during the Session, and invite to a press conference on Tuesday 2 November at 9.30 in Hvammur at the Grand Hotel.
The official opening of the Nordic Council Session is on Tuesday at 14.30, followed a quarter of an hour later by the summit meeting on Green growth - the way out of the crisis. All the Nordic prime ministers will speak.
The deportation case will be raised in the report by the ministers for co-operation on Wednesday 3 November between 9 and 10.30. The Nordic foreign ministers' will hold a press conference at 11.30.
The Danish film director Thomas Vinterberg and the Finnish author Sofi Oksanen will be among those present when the Nordic Film's prizes for film, literature, music and the environment are awarded in the Opera on Wednesday from 18.30-20.00.
On Thursday morning at 9 the ministers for Nordic co-operation will answer questions on everything from Danish repatriation of Nordic citizens to common Nordic consumer policies. This will be followed by the debate on the Nordic Council's business, which includes a common Nordic deposit system, young people's working life and an electronic register of doctors and other health professionals in the region.
The climate and energy sector will also be involved in the Session. The politicians will discuss the opportunity to save billions by harmonising support for the production of renewable energy. In addition, there is a proposal for a common Nordic platform during the international climate negotiations, as well as strengthened co-operation on the support of billions to the Third World from the Nordic Development Fund.
The Nordic Council Session will close with the election of the new President who will take over the helm at the beginning of the new year when the Presidency is handed over from Iceland to Denmark.
