Visa freedom with Russia is long-term goal
Finland's prime minister, Jyrki Katainen, announced at the Nordic and Baltic prime ministers' press conference in Copenhagen that he supports visa freedom with Russia.
"Finland issues 1.2 million visas annually, of which 80 per cent are multiple-entry visas. A very large number of travellers cross the border, and, on average, each visa holder makes three trips", said Katainen.
The prime minister looks favourably on the large number of visas.
"Visa freedom would be a positive development, but it must be controlled. In addition to the document there is the question of border control. One must know who has the right to cross the border.
Finland has made a great deal of progress in this matter as the number of multiple-entry visas has increased. Katainen hopes that the Russians will make the same progress. The fact that there is no need for a visa for cruises to St. Petersburg is a positive signal for freedom of movement in Russia.
Prime minister Katainen does not, however, expect a quick solution to the question of visa freedom, and says that it will take several years.
