Watch youngsters who quit school
As many as 20 per cent of youngsters drop out of school in certain areas of the Nordic region, often because they can't cope. The Nordic countries should work together to put a stop to this negative trend, stressed the Social Democratic Group in the Nordic Council.
The Nordic governments should earmark money in the Nordic budget 2010 for research into drop-outs. In particular, what is needed is research into best practice examples in the Nordic countries, that is, measures that will help to reduce the number of young people who drop out.
The number of drop-outs is particularly a problem in Denmark, where up to every fifth young pupil leaves school. The good PISA results in Finland are partly due to the fact that the number of pupils who underachieve is so low - thus also the number of school drop-outs.
The Nordic education ministers will raise the question on research into teaching at their meeting in December. The Nordic Social Democrats call for the ministers to approve a proposal to earmark money for research into school drop-outs. In any case, a research project should be carried out around this subject on Nordic level, according to the Social Democrats.
The Nordic Council is gathered for its autumn meetings in Mariehamn in Åland 29-30 September.
