Winners of Nordic Climate Day competition named
Young people in the Nordic Region are afraid of what climate change may bring. Yet they also show great willingness to change their own habits and help cut CO2 emissions, a joint Nordic climate competition held in the run-up to the UN Climate Summit has revealed.
As a prelude to next week's summit in Copenhagen, the Nordic Council of Ministers held the first-ever Nordic Climate Day for school students and teachers in all five countries.
Nearly 4,000 students entered a competition in which they used text, audio or pictures to highlight local climate issues. The winners can now be seen on klimanorden.org
Many of the contributions reveal young people's fears for the future: Recurring themes include widespread floods, rising seas and the world coming to an end if we do nothing.
However, the students are also prepared to act to avert this crisis.
As a result of the competition, which took place on 11 November, 500 oposals for improving climate teaching have now been uploaded onto klimanorden.org.
Climate Day's objectives were to increase knowledge of climate issues among young people in the Nordic Region and inspire them to take action.
Winners have been named for each country, as well as an overall winner for the entire Nordic Region.
The Nordic Ministers of Education organised the event. The competition was sponsored by Telenor and Danfoss Universe.
