A report prepared by, amongst others, Denmark's former minister of defence, Søren Gade, was published in conjunction with a Nordic-Baltic foreign affairs ministerial meeting.

The report points out that comprehensive political collaboration is increasingly necessary to defend the region's interests, not least in regard to the EU, NATO and other international organisations.

The Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lene Espersen, who represents the Danish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, welcomes the report's recommendations.

"We are witnessing the emergence of a new world order, where new players will benefit greatly from regional unity", said Espersen, according to the Danish newspaper Politiken.

The minister sees great potential, in particular in relation to Arctic co-operation, energy policies, as well as relations to Russia and common ground in relation to the EU policy for neighbouring countries.

The report, commissioned by Denmark and Latvia, can be read in English on the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' website.
