Youth – Voice of the Future

Listening to young people´s voices, hopes and expectations is vital in today´s rapidly changing world. This is especially true in a Nordic context where the aim is to create the best living conditions in the world for youth. One of the major projects executed towards this direction in the Nordic countries was asking young people about their perspectives and visions, well being and lifestyles through a comparative research in 2009.

The project was carried out in all the Nordic countries, including Faroe Islands, Greenland and the Åland Islands amongst 16 to 19 year old students.  We now have answers from young people in their transition age and we must make sure that their voice is heard.

Based on answers from young people in the Nordic countries the conference will reveal differences and similarities in the lifestyle and leisure-time activities, language and cultural differences, education, gender and equality, extra-curricular activities and participation, mental and physical health disparities, substance use, values, attitudes and future expectations of young people in the Nordic countries.

The presentations of conclusions from the research will be followed by workshops and panel discussions where field workers, politicians, researchers, scholars and others involved in improving the living conditions of youth will discuss how to continue work on the implementation of current youth policies and how to facilitate greater synergy between the different policies and action in youth issues.

The conference will present ideas for the continued work on implementing current policies on youth within the Nordic Council and how we can gain the ultimate goal that the Nordic countries should be the best place in the world for young people.
