The theme of the UN CSW Session in New York, which starts on 27 February 2012, is the empowerment of rural women. The Nordic Ministers for Gender Equality will participate to present the Nordic perspective, solutions and challenges on the theme at the UN Headquarters.

Equal rights for men and women is the key to social and economic progress in rural areas too. This is one of the most important experiences the Nordic ministers bring to the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, which is this year about women's role in the development of rural areas.
The Nordic Region - the Most Gender Equal in the World
According to World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Report the Nordic Region was the most gender equal region in the world in 2011. The last six years the five Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, have reached the top ranks in the Gender Gap Report of the countries with the highest level of gender equality. The Nordic gender equality ministers are taking important steps to maintain this ranking.
