Theme session to focus on the Arctic

The Arctic will be the theme of the first Nordic Council theme session of the year in Iceland on 23 March. The plenary debate, which will highlight Arctic issues from an environmental-, equality- and welfare perspective, will be broadcast live over the Internet from the Alting in Reykjavik

More cooperation between government and business is the only road ahead to save the climate, according to former UN Climate Chief Yvo de Boer. He spoke at a Nordic Council seminar in Oslo on January 24, where he urged the Nordic countries to take the lead towards a global climate solution.

UN Climate Change TV featured an overview of the Nordic participation at COP17 in the first week of the conference.

The Nordic ecolabel, the Swan, may soon fly south, all the way to South America. The Nordic Council of Ministers has just initiated a joint venture with the United Nations Environment Programme, where Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay may set up a new ecolabel inspired by the Nordic countries.

"Individually, the Nordic countries are small, while the Arctic waters cover a vast area, so the Nordic Region will have to work together to improve safety at sea in the far north. And why not ask shipping companies to help foot the bill?" the Nordic Council asked at its annual Session in Copenhagen, 1-3 November.
Matspill ska bekämpas med kunskap

Nordiska rådet vill bekämpa matspill, som globalt sett medför samma utsläpp av växthusgaser som världens samlade transportsektor. Nordiska rådet beslutade därför på sitt möte den 3 november att dra igång det som kan bli upptakten till en större nordisk framstöt om matavfall. Det är i linje med de nordiska statsministrarnas önskan om att upprioritera samarbetet om avfallshantering i Norden.

The autumn Session of the Nordic Council has elected Kimmi Sasi as President of the Council for 2012, when it is the turn of his native Finland to hold the post. Silvia Modig has been elected Vice-President.
