About funding by the Nordic Council of Ministers
The Nordic Council of Ministers’ most important criterion for granting project funding is that the projects must benefit the Nordic countries and the adjacent areas. The projects must generate Nordic synergy. Some 500 projects and activities are launched and run per annum.
It is vitally important that the projects financed by the Nordic budget generate joint Nordic synergy. The principle of “Nordic synergy” is a crucial factor in deciding which activities should come under the umbrella of joint Nordic co-operation. The starting point for all Nordic activities must be that they:
- would otherwise take place within a national framework, but can achieve greater positive effects via common Nordic solution;
- display and develop Nordic solidarity;
- increase Nordic competency and competitiveness.
The questions to be answered in the application should be answered from the perspective of assessment for Nordic synergy. The project must meet one or more criteria for Nordic synergy.
It is crucial that the person applying for funding answers these questions accurately, since the question of Nordic synergy is decisive for granting funding. If the questions are not answered, the application will not be processed.
In addition to general questions, professional priorities should also be taken into consideration. All sectors in the Nordic Council of Ministers make plans and programmes for their activities that express the political will associated with the objectives defined for Nordic co-operation. Projects to be financed with Nordic funds must therefore fall within the framework of the agreed priorities.
