Current trends in the global market for green technology leave plenty of scope for the Nordic countries and Nordic companies to make progress. Cost-effectiveness is a prerequisite for green growth and conversion. The Region is ideally placed to become an international leader in green growth, which will provide a major boost to job creation, competitiveness and the environment," the prime ministers said during the Globalisation Forum 2011. Eight areas have been identified as of particular relevance and described in the report “The Nordic Region – leading the way in green growth”.

The theme for the meeting in Riksgränsen was "A strong competitive Nordic Region in a global economy". The Nordic countries are facing several challenges both with regard to the economic market trends and the climate and energy situation. The main theme of this conference was therefore the prospects of maintaining competitiveness and welfare, as well as dealing with the challenges of climate change in the future.
