About International Co-operation

The Nordic Council and Nordic Council of Ministers have close co-operation with a number of international, regional and national organisations outside the Nordic region.

The Nordic Council of Ministers focuses first and foremost on development and growth in the Baltic Sea Region and, in the years to come, will play an important role in the implementation of the EU’s strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

The Nordic Council of Ministers has worked closely with Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Northwest Russia for many years. The focus areas for this co-operation include education and research, innovation and the creative industries, the environment, climate and energy, economic co-operation and strengthening civic society.

In regard to Belarus, the focus of the Nordic Council of Ministers' activities is first and foremost on developing democracy.

The Nordic Council of Ministers works also with the Arctic area and is involved in developing co-operation with the Nordic Region's neighbours in the west, in particular, Canada.

Moreover, the Nordic Council of Ministers has initiated cooperation and information exchange with the Visegrad Group- a regional body incorporating the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The main aim of the Group is to strengthen stability in the Central European region, promoting multilateral collaboration and furthering European integration.

The Nordic ministers for co-operation have the overall co-ordination responsibility for the joint Nordic neighbour co-operation, but the individual policy councils of ministers have various activities in their areas.
