The Swedish Presidency 2008

Sweden holds the 2008 Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, for which the programme is 'Concentrating our Strengths'. The programme focuses on the areas of co-operation and the challenges that the Swedish Presidency thinks the Nordic countries and the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland can best meet together.

The programme is divided into four main themes: Competitiveness, Climate, Creativity and Co-ordination. The headings cover over-arching objectives and activities.

The Swedish Presidency is also continuing initiatives that were initiated by previous presidencies, such as the process of reforming and modernising the structures of Nordic co-operation, particularly in relation to the Council of Ministers' institutions and other bodies. It is also continuing the work on gender mainstreaming in the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The programme covers areas of a more intersectoral character as well, such as the challenges of globalisation, sustainable development, research and innovation, freedom of movement to facilitate the movement of people and companies, co-operation with the adjacent territories, and issues concerning children and young people.

The sectoral programmes provide more detailed descriptions of the specific priorities, and outline which of the various ministerial councils have responsibility for them.
